International Workshop on “Measures of seismic damage to masonry buildings” and 2nd ENSeRVES – EAEE TG3 Meeting. Padova 25-26.6.1998
An International Workshop on “Measures of seismic damage to masonry buildings” was held in Monselice, Padova, Italy from June, 25 to 26 1998, sponsored by University of Padova, Dipartimento di Costruzioni e Trasporti and CNR-GNDT (the Italian National Group for Earthquake Protection). The workshop was linked with the activities of ENSeRVES, the European Network on Seismic Risk, Vulnerability and Earthquake Scenarios, and EAEE Task Group 3 (Seismic Risk and Earthquake Scenarios). The 2nd ENSeRVES – EAEE TG3 Meeting was held in Padova in the afternoon of 26.6.98, after the Workshop.
During the five sessions of the workshop, a restricted number of researchers from different European countries (Czech Rep., France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Slovak Rep., U.K.) discussed the methodological aspects, relevant practical procedures and applications in damage survey and vulnerability evaluations of masonry constructions, particularly the old masonry multi-storey buildings and churches. The correlation between apparent, structural and economic damage and the definitions of damage grades and vulnerability classes in the new European Macro-seismic Scale have been particularly analysed.
The extensive damage to masonry constructions observed in the recent Umbria-Marche earthquake (September / October 1997) and the criteria used to survey and classify, taking into account also their historical and cultural value, were presented by the Italian researchers of GNDT and SSN (the National Seismic Service).
Proceedings of the Workshop are expected to be published by the end of this year. More information about the workshop can be obtained by the local organiser:
