SPECIAL SESSION TS2: SEISMIC RISK IN THE MEDITERRANEAN BASIN

The Special session TS2 was a very short session (half day) dedicated to the seismic risk in the Mediterranean basin. This session was chaired by Professor Rafael Blasquez-Martinez and was organised in two stages:

First, a lecture about seismic risk of the Mediterranean basin by an invited lecturer: Prof. Alberto Marcellini, who made an impressive speech on the tectonic and seismic Mediterranean context, but above all who stressed the contradictions between the different approaches of this problem by the Mediterranean seaside countries. Prof. Alberto Marcellini compared the different national codes and pointed the rules. This lecture was very appreciated by the attendants.

Secondly, oral presentation of the selected papers for this session and discussion. 13 papers had been selected for this session and seven papers were presented from Tunisia, United Kingdom (about studies in Greece), Spain, Romania, Italy. These papers treat, in most cases, seismic zoning:

Sarni El Boroi; seismic performance of selected reinforced concrete buildings in the Gafsa Region.

A.J. Kappos Site- dependent inelastic spectra and ductility-based behaviour factors for Greece.

Joaqui Mulas; Seismic hazard and vulnerability mapping of Murcia city (Spain).

Emil-Sever Georgescu; European versus worldwide disasters.

Nejla B Romdhane; Microzoning the city of Tunis by recording background noise.

Alberto Marcellini; Seismic microzonation of some municipalities of the rubicund area.

Dario Slejko; Probabilistic seismic hazard spectra for the Adriatic region.

Finally, an important and lively discussion took place about fundamental problems on hazard determination. This discussion was unfortunately interrupted by lunch break.
