THE ACTIVITIES OF THE WORKING GROUP

September 1998-June 1999

I.

The general report of the WG7 (TG10) of EAEE on "Preservation of Historical Monuments", and its activities within the period 1994-1998 have been presented during the 11^th European Conference on Earthquake Engineering, in Paris, on September 10, 1998. The report has been jointly presented by the convenor of the group Professor C. A. Syrmakezis (Athens) and the member of the group Professor Dina d’ Ayala (Bath).

The same day a meeting of the members of the group took place. Nine members of the participated: Robin Spence (Cambridge), Dina d’Ayala (Bath), Caterina Carocci (Rome), Agostino Goretti (Rome), Filomena Pappa (Rome), Emilia Juhasova (Bratislava), Ludmil Tzenov (Sofia), Predrag Gavrilovich (Skopje) and the convenor of the group C.A. Syrmakezis (Athens).

New ideas of EAEE, concerning further motivation of the groups have been presented by the convenor. Future activities of the group have been discussed.

The conclusions of the meeting can be summarised on the following points, constituting the basis for the discussion of future WG interests and activities.

• Data base. Organisation of a data base, as complete as possible is highly desirable. Information on terminology definitions (short dictionary), publications (papers, etc.), types of structures and structural elements and types of response (classification), types of intervention methods (classification) has to be included.
• Research topics. Investigations of the vulnerability parameters referring either to the individual historical structures or to the complexes of the historical structures of historical centres have to be considered primary importance.
• Cooperation among the members. Organisation of joint projects and activities, common courses (teaching, monographs, etc.) meetings, seminars.
• Financial support. It is urgently needed. The convenor of the group will investigate the following sources: European Union, International Organisations (UN, UNESCO, etc.), National funds (with the assistance of the members of the group).

III.

The convenor undertook the responsibility to organise a meeting of the group in Greece. Through the Department of Creta, he applied already for financial support by the European Union. The meeting is planned for next spring 2000, in Creta.
