International Conference on Earthquake Engineering to Mark 40 Years from the Catastrophic 1963 Skopje Earthquake and Successful City construction
Skopje Earthquake -40 Years Of European Earthquake Engineering (SE 40EEE)
Organized by: Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (IZIIS)
University “Ss. Cyril and Methodius”, Skopje
Invitation
On behalf of the Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (IZIIS) and the Conference Committees, Prof. Mihail Garevski -Director of the Institute and President of the Organizing Committee has the honour of inviting you to the International Conference to be held on the occasion of 40 years since the 1963 Skopje catastrophic earthquake. The invitation is addressed to all appreciated doyens in the field of earthquake engineering, experts who gave their own contribution to the reconstruction of the city and to all researchers and scientists of succeeding younger generations.
Patron of the Conference
Mr. Risto PENOV, Mayer of the City of Skopje
Short History and Objectives
Early morning (5:17 a.m.), on July 26, 1963, Skopje was hit by a catastrophic earthquake. More than 1000 people were killed and several thousands injured. Many buildings collapsed or were seriously damaged. The catastrophe was estimated as the heaviest that happened in the wider region during a longer period of time. The people were shocked by this calamity that took place so suddenly. However, thanks to the initiated highly successful and humane domestic and international post-disaster actions, Skopje was soon revived and successfully rebuilt. The organized successful and synchronized post-earthquake activities in the Skopje case have internationally been recognized as a pioneering example. The Skopje citizens will always remember and will be grateful for the extended international solidarity.
The Conference is conceived as a meeting place for researchers, scientists and professionals from different generations. Special guests of the Conference will be our outstanding friends, who, as world-renowned experts took direct participation in the reconstruction of Skopje and have played a leading role in the development of modern earthquake engineering and education of generations of successful researchers in the field.
At the time of the Skopje earthquake, there was only a small number of privileged experts who could apply numerical methods and newly developed software which was due to the extremely high cost of main frame computers. Today, thanks to the PC computers, earthquake engineering research is not only a privilege of the developed countries but is equally accessible to the research and engineering society worldwide. The Conference shall therefore provide an excellent opportunity for researchers of different generations from all over the world to exchange their experience and achievements in the field of structural safety and earthquake engineering in general. The specific objectives of the Conference will be focused on some present aspects: identification of the most appropriate commercial and university software for seismic analysis of structures, determination of the extent to which nonlinear analysis of structures exposed to seismic effects is used by design engineers or whether it is still limited to research purposes only, determination of scope and kinds of needed experimental tests, etc.
Finally, the Conference shall also be a good opportunity for the mayors of earthquake stricken towns to exchange their experience in the field of reconstruction and seismic risk mitigation and for all the participants to promote research cooperation.
Themes
The scope of the Conference will cover wide and various aspects in earthquake engineering field and will generally include the following topics:
1. Lessons from Past Earthquakes
2. Engineering Seismology
3. Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering
4. Societal, Economic and Urban Planning Aspects
5. Structural Modelling, Analysis and Seismic Safety
