3.Future Activities and Meetings

SUMMARY of DISCUSSIONS

Concerning Med-Campus Project :

Co-Coordinator A.Ansal briefly summarised the available information concerning the Med-Campus projects. He proposed to postpone the application for a Med-Campus project to late 1998 due to the ongoing intense activities related to the Seismic Microzonation Book and due to the activities for the ESC General Assembly and EAEE Conference to be held during 1998.

Concerning Seismic Microzonation Book :

Co-Coordinator A.Marcellini summarised the decisions reached in the previous meetings and presented the Table of Contents for the Seismic Microzonation book. He explained the basic ideas concerning each chapter and the logic behind for writing such a book.

Various issues concerning the purpose, the contents and the authors and/or coordinators for the chapters of the book were discussed among the participating members.

There was a general consensus that the book should consist of below listed 8 chapters with A.Marcellini & A.Ansal as the editors and with following persons as the authors and/or the coordinators for the related chapters :

Introduction (A.Marcellini & A.Ansal)

Chapter 1. Seismicity (A.Marcellini)

Chapter 2. Seismic Hazard (C.A.Papaioannou)

Chapter 3. Geotechnical Aspects (A.Ansal)

Chapter 4. Zonation with Respect to Soil Amplification (D. Fäh & P.Y.Bard)

Chapter 5. Zonation with Respect to Liquefaction (F.Vinale)

Chapter 6. Zonation with Respect to slope Instability (M.Maugeri)

Chapter 7. Case Studies (A.Marcellini & N.Theodulidis)

Chapter 8. Conclusions (A.Marcellini & A.Ansal)

It was agreed that the editors should write a preliminary version of the Introduction to be distributed to all chapter authors/coordinators, to possible contributors and to all members of EAEE/TG6 & ESC/WG4 Joint Group by the end of October.

It was also agreed that each chapter author/coordinator should prepare a short introduction or abstract outlining the contents of the chapter by the end of November 1997. After reviewing and editing these abstracts or introductions the final version for all chapters will be distributed to all members of EAEE/TG6 & ESC/WG4 Joint Group and to all possible contributors by the end of December 1997.

The purpose is to have the book printed by September 1998, before the EAEE Conference in Paris. Therefore the draft version of the chapters need to finished by the latest at the end of February 1998. After the editors complete their editing, the draft copy will be forwarded to experts in the field of microzonation and to all members of EAEE/TG6 & ESC/WG4 Joint Group to be reviewed.

There was a general agreement that all the written chapters should be forwarded to the editors by e-mail as attached documents preferably prepared by Windows95/Word 6. Figures for the draft copy can be inserted into the Word document. In the final version the authors will be asked to submit originals for the figures for printing.

The general coordination of the book will be the responsibility of A.Marcellini. Therefore all chapter authors/coordinators, possible contributors and all members are asked to send him their comments or suggestions related with microzonation book and also a copy of all the letters written, views exchanged among chapter authors/coordinators and possible contributors.

Concerning Future Activities of TG6 & WG4

One of the important future activity is the organisation of a symposium in the upcoming XXV ESC General Assembly to be held in Tel Aviv, Israel during 23-28 August 1998. There was general consensus that the title of the symposium might be "Site Effects and Design Ground Motion" with Conveners A.Marcellini & A.Ansal. All the members of EAEE/TG6 & ESC/WG4 Joint Group are encouraged to take part and to contribute to the symposium.

It was decided to have the fourth Joint EAEE/TG6 & ESC/WG4 Meeting during ECEE to be held between 6-12 September 1998 in Paris, France.

CONCLUSIONS

Based on the discussions that took place during the Third Joint EAEE/TG6 & ESC/WG4 Meeting, there was a general consensus about :

1. Postponing the application for a Med-Campus Project to late 1998,

2. The authors and/or coordinators for all the chapters of the Seismic Microzonation Book,

3. The time schedules and deadlines for writing the abstracts and the chapters,

4. The organisation of a symposium on "Site Effects and Design Ground Motion" in XXV ESC General Assembly,

5. Having the Fourth Joint EAEE/TG6 & ESC/WG4 Meeting in Paris during 11th ECEE.
